Our Instructors & Staff Members
Our Instructors have spent many years devoted to training in the art of Tang Soo Do and other martial arts and have attained a certain level of expertise to qualify them as teachers and also mentors.
Through extensive testing, certification and tournament level competition, our staff has attained mastery in this martial art and now enjoy sharing their skill and passing it on to their students. Here are a few of Jason Flame's Tang Soo Do University's instructors and other staff members, starting with Master Jason Flame:
Master Jason Flame (Chief Instructor)
Master Jason Flame is a 5th Degree Black Belt and owner of the Tang Soo Do University. He has been a top instructor of both children and adults since 1990, and has himself been a devoted practitioner since 1985. Master Flame is delighted to share his knowledge and love of martial arts, and looks forward to working with you! See Our Master page for more detailed information.

Mrs. Jackie Flame (Instructor/ Manager)
Mrs. Flame has trained in the art of Tang Soo Do since 1993 and is now a 3rd Dan Black Belt. She has enjoyed training and instructing the Kardio Kickboxing program for many years, placing emphasis on basic Martial Arts techniques, set to music, as a means of fitness, strength building and fun. An inspiration to all of our students, but particularly the girls, she is currently our Black Belt Team Coordinator. Mrs. Flame has a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology and lives together with her husband, Master Jason Flame, and their two beautiful children and dog, "Chester". When she is not working hard at the studio or enjoying family time, Mrs. Flame is happy to be working out at the gym, scrapbooking, spending time with friends, and of course, shopping.

Mr. Chris Johnson (Head Instructor, Moorpark)
Mr. Johnson is a 2nd Degree Black Belt and the Head Instructor at our Moorpark school. With experience in Tae Kwon Do, Shotokan, and Aikido, Mr. Johnson began training with us in February, 2004 and has quickly adapted to Tang Soo Do. He is currently a student at California State University of Northridge studying Business Law. Mr. Johnson is a very creative instructor and enjoys working with kids.

Mr. Nick Canady (Instructor, Simi Valley)
Mr. Canady is one of our instructors at our newest school in Simi Valley. Mr. Canady is also a certified American Top Team Level One Instructor. His love for martial arts and his desire to continue his personal growth makes us proud to have him become the leader of our new school. Mr. Canady is a natural athlete and is a great example for his students.

Mr. Charles Grimes (Instructor, Moorpark)
Mr. Grimes is a 3rd Degree Black Belt and has been an active student since 1995. With experience from the Moorpark High School wrestling team, Mr. Grimes has acquired some new skills to add to our grappling classes. He has also been a dedicated member of our Black Belt and Masters Clubs and enjoys working with weapons. He can always be found helping with classes and participating in any school demonstrations.

Master Jeffrey Vandenburg (Assistant Instructor, Moorpark)
Master Jeffrey Vandenburg is a 4th Degree Master of Tang Soo Do and has been training since he was 5 years old. Master Vandenburg earned his Black Belt at Chatsworth Karate under Master Mark Cox. We are very fortunate to have him join our team and share his vast knowledge of Tang Soo Do.

Mr. Gurpreet Sahan (Instructor, Simi Valley)
Mr. Sahan earned his Black Belt with us in 1999, after a nine year hiatus, he is back! It is a pleasure to have him be a part of our team. Mr. Sahan can always be found helping students and answering questions, he is very passionate about teaching Tang Soo Do.

Mrs. Danielle Unterberger (Head Satellite Instructor)
Mrs. Unterberger began her training in March 2004. She became a member of the staff just months before receiving her 1st Dan Black Belt in Dec. 2006. She now teaches and assists classes and is continuing her training along with her entire family. She holds an Elementary Teaching Credential and has experience working with children of all ages. Mrs. Unterberger is excited to have the opportunity to share her love for martial arts with our students.

Ms. Maria Bouchard (Instructor)
Ms. Maria has a great love for martial arts and working with students of all ages. She started her training in 2003 with her two children. Ms. Maria is a nurse practitioner with specialites in emergency medicine and cardiology She holds a Masters degree from UCLA. After traveling extensively as a flight nurse, she retired as an officer from the Air Force.

Mr. Matt Jones
Mr. Jones is an active National Weapons and Forms competitor and is part of the exciting martial arts performance team, SIDESWIPE! He is a huge part of the success of our Demo Teams and will no doubt become a World Champion in the near future.

Miss Chaya Turrow (Assistant Instructor)
Miss Turrow earned her Black Belt in 2005 and was the youngest female ever at TSDU to achieve the rank of 2nd Degree Black Belt. She is very active in our community and was named Miss Ventura County's Outstanding Teen for 2008. Miss Turrow is a great example of being a role model inside and out of the karate school.
